Review of The Great Debaters (2007) by Jay L — 03 Nov 2012
"When the nation was in need, he inspired them to give us all hope...".
A highly inspirational and supremely touching tour de force. The Great Debaters is one of those films that has a ridiculously boring title, and seems to be a film that wouldn't be too fun to watch. Lets be honest, who wants to watch a film about debating? Despite how I felt toward the film, I went ahead and watched it and I'm mighty glad I did. The Great Debaters is a profoundly moving and sentimental blast that really is a blast to watch throughout. Its one that really caught me off guard, a film that catches everything with precision and fantastic execution. Director Denzel Washington does a rare feat in which is both behind and in front of the camera as he helms this unique blast of powerful cinema. The Great Debaters is pure inspiration, a relentless blast of emotion throughout, you'll be witness to every end of the emotional spectrum with this film and in the end you will be cheering for much more. What these few priveledged students did in the 1930's while attending Wiley College is nothing short of amazing and miraculous, Denzel Washington and company give us a front row seat to what these amazing kids endured and most of all achieved. Do yourself a favor and give this film a chance, I know it seems like it will be a boring watch, but trust me, this is a spectacular story that demands to be seen.
