Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Eric S — 13 Apr 2009
This is a small, really nice film. Malkovich is terrific as the downside-of-his-career mentalist Buck Howard. He imbues the character with pride, bravado, humor, and sadness. Think a lighter version of "The Wrestler" without the staples.
Colin Hanks turns in an extremely likable performance as Howard's new road manager. Some great as-themselves cameos, not to mention Dave Atell and Ralph Malph in tiny parts. My one gripe is that Hanks's I-wanna-be-a-writer-not-a-lawyer storyline is laid on a bit thick, making me think it's autobiographical from the writer/director.
However, this plot strand does let us see Tom Hanks as the dad, so, I guess it's OK. And the filmmakers know that you can't have a movie involving magic without Ricky Jay in it.
