Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Kat O — 12 Dec 2009
I love John Malkovich for a number of reasons, not least of which is his unique ability to make you love him while you simultaneously pity/hate/despise him. Is it the characters he chooses or his skill? Not sure, but this film is held upright by his performance.
It's essentially a coming of age bit and it doesn't delve too deeply into the characters, which is a shame, because there would have been so much more to the Buck Howard character's complexity that was worth examining.
Everyone else was fairly thin and not developed. This is really a two star flick for content and design, with an extra star for the performances.
