Review of The Great Beauty (2013) by Tor M — 17 Feb 2014
Toni Servillo is a cool actor, and he delivers yet again.
He's the modern Marcello Rubini acted out by Marcello Mastroianni in "La Dolce Vita".
This feels like a Fellini film in newer times or definitely a Fellini-tribute of some sort. The story here is pretty open and drifting, still we get that this is the lead searching for the "big beauty". It has been in his life for decades but where is it now?
The story is well told with beautiful images. It's a bit tricky to hang on too, and pretty flat as well. You don't know where we are going and we aren't moving much. Few big happenings here, but at the same time,.
Many lovely and elegant scenes.
After a while we get something more of a story, or a substory and it's a neat feature.
The movie is about Rome, love, decadence and values. It's not an easy film and sadly not an amazing film for me.
Great quotes and great usage of music lifts this complex and long film. Sometimes very poetic, sometimes very little engaging.
7.5 out of 10 food interested cardinals.
