Review of The Greasy Strangler (2016) by Alex M — 12 Mar 2017
A John Waters wannabe tries to make the most non-sensical, bizarre gross-out stunt movie possible. Nothing in the movie even tries to make any sense. For that reason, I didn't enjoy it. It's meandering, incoherent and ultimately, pointless?
I will say Michael St. Michael's has charisma and all of his scenes are interesting to watch, even if his character Big Ronnie is purposely written to be the most disgusting, lewd character possible. I really disliked his character, but St. Michael makes Big Ronnie, somehow, tolerable? Sky Elobar as Big Brayden plays a low-IQ social retard, and his performance was like an impression of Will Ferrell and Mike Meyers. From the first minute of the movie, you already know who the greasy strangler is, so there's no intention of adding a mystery element or engage the viewer intellectually. If anything, the writing is completely condescending, it insults the viewer by continuing to watch, ramping up the nonsensical and absurdity. It's mostly a schlocky slasher, the death scenes reminiscent of the cheesy eyeball-popping gore from Troma horror. When you take away the stupid death scenes, it's just endless awkward scenes of a father and son trying to have sex with an overweight piece of flesh. They don't even try to write Janet as a credible female character, she's just a piece of flesh without an ounce of free thought or personality. I'm flabbergasted that so many people responded positively to this movie and this of it as a "cult" movie to watch with friends and at parties. I don't think it's even that entertaining to make fun of with friends. Really felt like an endurance exercise for degenerates who enjoy this kind of sick stuff. How far can they go? I didn't feel like puking at any moment during the film, I was just mostly bored and in disbelief that there's a market for this movie.
