Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Ryan Z — 18 Jul 2007
Heartbreaking. That's the easiest way to describe John Ford's beautiful masterpiece. Henry Fonda gives a stellar performance in a movie that defines the phrase "stellar performances." The Joads load up in their broken-down truck to make the trek to California: the land of opportunity.
The hardships along the way nearly destroy the family, both as people and as a unit. I have watched this movie a dozen times, and never tire of it. John Carradine, always a solid actor in any movie (despite its quality), shines as Casy the wayward preacher; my favorite character.
Jane Darwell is also fantastic. I can't recommend this film enough.
