I have never read the book, but I still enjoyed this film. I don't want to say that in the pleasurable sense, because this film isn't cheerful.
The acting is most impressive from the mother, played by Jane Darwell. I haven't seen her in any film before but she amazed me. (Which didn't surprise me learning that she won Best Actress).
This is a classic. It won't blow you away, but it should move you.
