Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Christopher S — 30 Aug 2009
Director John Ford's sweeping adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel gets off to an extraordinary start - with entrancing, grim black and white imagery and powerful cinematic storytelling.
Unfortunately, after the first 20 minutes or so, it never quite reaches that height again. The story remains strong with some unforgettable moments and excellent performances - but it ultimately fell short of the absolute classic I'd been led to expect.
