Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Susan B — 26 Sep 2009
Great story of a family who keeps a-goin. On some level one might think it is somehow pro-communism, but a person should not try to read that into the story. It's not about politics of any kind really.
In my opinion it's simply about the stength of the human spirit. As in the book, there are rich charactors and this movie was marvelously cast. John Carradine in the Christ- type role and John Qualen as Muley Graves really stand out.
I get chills. 'Course Henry Fonda was great as usual. The milk of human kindness bit from the end of the book was ommitted and that could have ruined the movie for me, but Ma & Pa's chat was great.
"We're the people.".
