Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Emily B — 15 Nov 2010
Eh. A decent movie, but hardly the masterpiece it's claimed as being. It's kind of dull at times, and doesn't seem to have any kind of clear lead character until the third act, and even then, he gives one stupid monologue and leaves, effectively ending the film. How thrilling.
I haven't read the book so I have no way to compare; I imagine it's much, much better. And, to its credit, it looks pretty good, and Henry Fonda sure was quite the handsome fella. I also liked the goofy former preacher guy.
Overall though, not really anything special. I don't see what the big deal with this film is. It's plotless and not very interesting. The ideas are good, but you're better off reading the book, I think.
