Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Ryan K — 03 Mar 2011
The Grapes of Wrath was a very emotionally taxing, larger than life epic that really inspired me. In hindsight I am sorry I haven't seen it earlier. What really stood out to me was the the cinematography.
I was reading that the DP and director John Ford tried to replicate the look and feel of the pictures and film taken of the actual Depression. With the stark overpowering shadows and great costume design I'd say they nailed it.
It was quite a bit happier and optimistic than the book (and quite a bit more entertaining). I was surprised to find out Steinbeck actually loved the movie in spite of the drastic changes. It is another example about how politics stood in the way of a great film winning the Oscars.
I think it deserved it although I haven't seen it's adversary: Rebbecca.
