Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Daniel C — 27 Dec 2012
I won't lie. Having read the incredible book I was bitterly disappointed by the film which was edited to death and the plot was just rewritten in a lot of places. Some of the acting is ok but generally the film is meant to portray the endless misery of the migrants out West but turns it into a depiction of a long trip to a Butlins holiday camp.
Read the engrossing book which vividly creates fascinating characters and avoid this film which glosses over all the substance. The film was made in 1940 which was too early to put such a gritty and uncomprimising plot to picture.
People weren't ready for the book which was why it was so heralded but it was a step too far to bring those issues to full life in picture. Shame.
