Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Jonathan B — 21 Sep 2008
Superbly haunting vison of America in the Depression, the one film and book to most vividly capture the horrors of its time. Whilst inevitably compressing the original, and also giving it a softened ending, the film still has several outstanding scenes, combining studio and location work to equally atmospheric effect.
As stark a depiction of America as Hollywood is ever likely to put on screen.
