Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by John D — 20 May 2011
The combination of Ford and Steinbeck was always going to be something special, and the movie certainly does justice to Steinbeck's seminal work on hope and injustice. It's a movie from a time when every shot was composed and framed as though the filmmaker only had that one shot to do.
Jane Darwell steals the show as Ma Joad, followed closely by John Carradine's vulnerable and joyous Casey. This is what cinema is all about.
