Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Michael H — 13 Jan 2012
Make no mistake about it, for as strong as this movie is, it is no substitute for John Steinbeck's great, great novel. If you haven't yet, read it, regardless of whether you decide to watch this film or not.
That out of the way, the film is an amazingly solid adapation of the book, that stands strong on its own. There isn't a stray element in this movie and it all works in beautiful harmony...the performances, Toland's photography, Ford's direction, and the great American nightmare story. The ending of the novel is definately missed, but the film's ending doesn't betray it. Highly recommended viewing, and reading.
