Review of The Grapes of Wrath (1940) by Alex T — 29 Dec 2008
Extremely overrated. I recently read the book and Ma Joad's character was much stronger there. The only reason I can think of for making her so much weaker is that Jane Darwell couldn't have won an Oscar for being stoic all the time.
There are plot holes here you could drive a loaded-down late-30s truck through--what the hell happened to Noah??? And let's not even talk about how Casy could have broken out of jail and spent months working on a peach plantation in the space of an afternoon.
Henry Fonda performed decently, but many of the other actors were terrible--for instance the guy they got to play Muley.
