Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Jay C — 17 Jan 2013
Wong directs the fight sequences uniquely well, combining clarity with flurry, delicacy with fury, and tranquility with ferocity. The cinematography effortlessly dances between rich hues and intense desaturation.
The plot thoughtfully meanders, swelling and ebbing at its own pace, and slowly reveals themes of opportunities forever lost, pinnacles never reached, and farewells becoming permanent. Even with its commercial appeal, it's another introspective Wong Kar Wai film that will be lost on many audiences.
The guy behind me fell asleep 20 minutes in and never woke up.
