Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Jack G — 08 Aug 2013
Just shy of a masterpiece- did Wong or Weinstein add some of those simplistic expository bits, and is there footage missing from the HK directors cut, I don't know- but it's so slight I can't help but tell you to see it immediately if your aching for some solid martial arts and sublime artistic and even poetic direction and staging.
when it sings it soars as exquisite style and it elevates martial arts, long the plane of b movie houses and rap groups into what you'd wanna see at the MoMA or something. tragedy and romance collide in it too, And its all the better for it.
