Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Daniel I — 24 Aug 2013
Beautiful to look at, and expertly crafted by art film director Wong Kar Wei, this epic chop-socky Ip Man bio does fall short of being a master-piece. IP Man was Bruce Lee's teacher and this was a story of Bruce's former teacher's life. However, Bruce, even depicted by an actor, doesn't feature at all. There are too many long drawn-out and uneventful scenes and even a few repetitive fight sequences, which is surely uncharacteristic of Woo Ping, the renowned choreographer.
All the same, the Grandmaster is quite an achievement, and is well worth a watch.
