Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Christopher G — 24 Aug 2013
Although it tells the story of the kung fu master Ip Man, The Grandmaster is not your typical martial arts film. Wong Kar Wai is not the first director that comes to mind when I think of martial arts films because his style of directing is slow and lingering and subtle.
He attempts to translate that into this film, but it doesn't always work. It's languorous and the action sequences overuse slow motion and often focus on the characters' footwork at the expense of capturing the best view of the action.
It's poetic, but it's not always what I as an audience member looks for in a story like this. I would definitely recommend it more to fans of Wong Kar Wai's previous movies than to fans of the martial arts movie genre as a whole.
