Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Gabe L — 25 Aug 2013
Wong Kar Wai's latest is also his most compatible with worldwide audiences. Though the storytelling is at times hard to follow, heartfelt performances and electrifying action sequences keep this epic moving. The cinematography and art direction are both masterful. Wuxia film composer Shigeru Umebayashi delivers a sweeping score. Tony Lueng is fantastic as Ip Man, but Ziyi Zhang steals the show as Ip Man rival Gong Er, giving a career performance.
It may not be the all-around best film you'll see this year, but this Hong Kong period piece is still better than most Hollywood fare, and is one of the best summer movies of the year.
