Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by John L — 02 Sep 2013
Authentic, touching, subtle, and glooming.. this film was everything a typical Chinese martial arts movie and more. The storyline is very simple but can be confusing if not paid attention to the dialogue, which is the typical conservative in an Eastern way.
The reason for this film to upset some can be its slowness throughout the film, but those who are bored and upset by this soon realize towards the end that all parts were building up to conclude one thing: the code of honor - respect for oneself.
The film also reminds Chinese moviemakers to move away from special effects because they are close to horrible, even in this film. There were also incongruence in fighting scenes when the fights in themselves don't make sense - or the law of it can be very hard to understand for non-practioners.
There were a lot of beautiful images in this film, but they stayed too long on the shots. Overall, the film can make you happy in the end because it took its time to develop.
