Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Michael L — 07 Sep 2013
With THE GRANDMASTER, Wong Kar Wai blends the mysteriously evocative romantic images of his true masterpiece IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE with his martial arts roots. THE GRANDMASTER is truly like no other martial arts film for Wong Kar Wai's compositions, editing, and lighting.
Staggering to look at, THE GRANDMASTER is a rare achievement where beauty and style convey meaning. Wong Kar Wai remains the sole genius (not a term I use lightly) since the hey day of Hollywood who actually knows how to use a close up to make his stars look gorgeous while relating a painful depth of emotion.
THE GRANDMASTER is riveting, sad, and insightful about the passing of time, love, loss, and honor.
