Review of The Grandmaster (2013) by Bo L — 11 Sep 2013
Of all the stylistic elements in Kung Fu-cinema to explore, Wong Kar Wai has chosen the questionable art of budget slow-motion, turning large parts of the film into an endless display of lagging close-ups.
Despite some truly inspired action-sequences, the film is dragged down further by paper thin characters and a narrative that is broken beyond belief. The film flutters aimlessly between biographic realism and fantasy, and in the end fails quite miserably at both.
