Seemingly the umpteenth recent film devoted to the life of Wing Chun master Yip Man, "The Grandmaster" for all its beauty and elegance comes off as a bit of a cock-tease of a film, if not a bit inchoate.
The direction, the production design, the editing, the acting, and the kung fu are all of exceptional quality. Uncharacteristically, it is Wong Kar-wai's vision which lets the film down a bit, and the expected stylistic flourishes are not enough to breathe new life into a biopic that feels at times like a watered-down version of his masterpiece "In The Mood for Love".
