Review of The Grand Seduction (2014) by Amilcar A — 14 Jun 2014
There is no question this movie is a blatant ripoff from Waking Ned Devine and I think that's OK. If you're going to plagiarize, shoot for the fences.
Obviously this is not Ned Devine since that movie is incomparable and the charm and chemistry between the characters cannot be repeated.
However this is a valiant attempt and I laughed and chuckled for close to two hours.
The movie is set in a little village in Nova Scotia or somewhere in the eastern most part of Canada. It's the kind of town where everyone knows each other, they never leave and the world seems to have been suspended many decades ago.
Sadly the town has fallen on hard times and there are no jobs so there is a very intricate plot to bring a factory. To do this they require a doctor and suddenly they find a hotshot in some legal troubles that is extorted into working there.
The details of the plot are predictable and silly but that's not what this movie is about. The story is about the eccentrics, the crazies and above all the lovable characters that permeate this town.
Lovely little movie if a bit predictable and soft.
