Review of The Grand Seduction (2014) by No O — 26 Sep 2014
And yet another Quebecois film gets remade here, but this time by English Canadian filmmaker Don Mckellar in full attempted comeback mode after the disasterously received Childstar from 2014 and an exile strictly to writing (Blindness) and television (Slings and Arrows), bringing with him strong weapons in Brendan Gleeson and Gordon Pinsent and another wounded wannabe star in Taylor Kirtsh who is licking his wounded from Battleship and various other failed Hollywood films of the last few years.
Seems like a bit of a mixed bag of a film trying to mix the east coast humour with a convulted scam to bring in big business and a doctor to save the community that I don't totally buy. The moments that trly ring true are the rare scenes with one of my fav Canadian starlets in Lianne Balaban who does great playing off Taylor and providing a great foil for Brendan in all of her scenes.
Nothing truly noteworthy here in terms of Canadian moviedom other than maybe attracting attention to the Quebecois original.
