Review of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Eric O — 27 Jan 2015
This is Wes Anderson's best film in many regards: the story actually grabs me, the characters' quirkiness is pulled back a bit to the point that they're almost relatable, and none of the characters are blatantly just an embodiment of Anderson's own self, childhood, and problems.
All that said, I still am not a fan of Anderson's style. Although this was a very potentially good story, the character quirks and the visual surrealism (although gorgeous) just makes the whole experience a little more of a story I listen to rather than an experience I get immersed in and relate to.
