Review of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Charly F — 07 Mar 2015
This is a great - actually brilliant - film. It also could have been longer. Ralph Fiennes is wonderful but so too is the rest of the cast and part of the fun is spotting famous people in small roles - "Isn't that the man from the insurance ad?" asked my friend - Harvey Keitel will be forever known as that.
The setting is fictional - but there are echos of what really happened in Europe in the 20th Century - the film is very funny but it is also very sad and there are some genuinely shocking moments. It is a great story as well and it has made me want to find out more about Stefan Zweig upon whose writings the film is based/inspired.
Incidentally, Tom Wilkinson's character (and Jude Law's - who plays the younger version) is based on Zweig - they even look like him - except Zweig committed suicide in 1942. Anyway, back to the film - the story is complete and doesn't feel rushed but I would love to find out more about the hotel and the adventures of its concierge - M.
Gustave H. - I don't suppose Wes Anderson would even consider going there, however. But I am very glad he invited to The Grand Budapest Hotel.
