Review of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Bev T — 16 Jan 2015
I'm not always a fan of "quirky" movies, but I absolutely loved this. There is never going to be a film that appeals to absolutely everyone, it's just not possible, but Grand Budapest Hotel comes pretty damn close judging by the reviews and the 9 Oscar nominations.
It is funny, immensely original and hugely engaging. It has amazing attention to detail and the acting by a stellar cast is second to none. It might not appeal to those who prefer endless action - explosions every 2 minutes, New York destroyed by ice storms or London flattened by meteors (and I must admit that I do enjoy those films too) but I just found this film hugely enjoyable - and at just 96 minutes long, it doesn't drag on or complacently assume that the viewer wishes to spend 3 hours in its company.
A shame that Ralph Fiennes didn't even get an Oscar nod but nevertheless I thought this was a wonderful piece of film-making.
