Review of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Bill C — 12 Mar 2015
I must confess I knew nothing about Wes Anderson films prior to watching this. It definitely was not what I expected. Given the incredible cast (Ralph Fiennes was excellent, and possibly the films main redeemer) I was disappointed with what I saw.
Yes the direction is good and the film is stylish but it fails on a comedic level. There are some funny elements but overall it seems flat and annoying in places. The story is quaint, elaborately decorated but ultimately uninteresting and at points incoherent. There is some sumptuous imagery and as aforementioned very good acting from.
Fiennes but at times the film frustrated me for reasons I don't know.
Whilst it isn't a bad film, it definitely isn't a great film. It is a niche film which will appeal to some more than others. Unfortunately it did not appeal to me but I would recommend it to those who appreciate Anderson's films.
