I haven't been a fan of Wes Anderson films in the past. I've found them odd, overrated, not nearly as clever as some people believe, and even unwatchable. So when I tell you The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) is the BEST PICTURE of 2014, then you know I mean it.
Ralph Fiennes gives a sublime performance as M. Gustave, Tony Revolori is charming in his debut as Zero, and the acting chemistry between the two is undeniable. The visuals are quirky and beautiful, like a delightful Absurdist dream brought to life.
The supporting cast is a venerable who's who of Hollywood and excellent though Jeff Jeff Goldblum and Edward Norton seem to especially fit in this world like a glove. The film is witty, clever, and often laugh-out-loud funny.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a masterpiece though it probably won't win the Academy Award Best Picture cause Oscar is notorious for dissing comedies. It's also a crime that Ralph Fiennes (what does this man have to do to win an Oscar? see Schindler's List or The English Patient) and Tony Revolori are not even nominated.
