Review of The Graduate (1967) by Kevin P — 01 Nov 2013
I remember seeing this movie when I was in high school and not really grasping what the heck was going on. I still wonder, even at the age of 62, what the overall theme and message of the movie is. An older woman, played by beautiful Anne Bancroft, seduces the young college aged man, played by Dustin Hoffman.
Why is he so interested in this older woman? And why would she really be interested in him? I can only presume that it would only be sexual, but are we really supposed to believe this, or is there something more here? Then the last half of the movie, we're supposed to believe that Dustin's character wants to run off with this older woman's daughter and marry her.
Really? We're supposed to believe that after having an affair with the mother, that he and the young woman would live happily ever after? What an odd fairy tale this is. Surely, there's got to be more to it all.
