Review of The Graduate (1967) by Andrew K — 26 Mar 2013
This film is not only representational of a whole generation, but also had a deep influence on pop culture. The Graduate is the story of an older woman's affair with an confused and disoriented college graduate.
The film is bitingly satirical whilst retaining the most delicate aspects of a coming of age film, and it also includes a memorable score by Simon and Garfunkel. The script is magnificent, and some sequences hands down memorable; who can forget after watching it the final shot of the two lovers on the bus.
The speech about plastics is prophetic. Anne Bancroft as the mature temptress is iconic and Hoffmann makes an impressive debut in the leading role, bringing a shyness to the character that adds delicacy to the story.
