Review of The Graduate (1967) by Trae K — 05 May 2014
I hope I don't get extreme heat by the majority for saying this, but I actually did NOT like this movie at ALL. I find this movie to be rather OFFENSIVE, INSULTING, and UNCOMFORTABLE for me to watch.
Why? Because of how I felt that Dustin Hoffman was only acting like a BRATTY kid throughout, and how he pretty much just allows ANYONE to CONTROL over his life without ever CONVINCING some SENSE into them somehow.
Also, what was the point? Dustin Hoffman's wimpy character allowing to be seduced by a bitchy mother while being in a relationship with her daughter is WRONG. How's this movie ever funny either? The characters are just saying ridiculous one-liners (looking at you, Dustin Hoffman), and there are even some weird moments that try WAY too hard to be comedic for me (Dustin Hoffman being dressed in that HORRENDOUS diving suit while getting into his swimming pool with his family watching and cheering for him during that whole scene).
I hate to say it, but there was only ONE thing that I liked about this film: the main theme song 'Sound Of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel, but THAT IS IT. My last thoughts overall: I do NOT see what is so 'classic' about this film whatsoever, and I couldn't even FINISH watching it either.
I'd rather stick with TRUE classics like "Raiders Of The Lost Ark," "The Shawshank Redemption," "To Kill A Mockingbird," "Back To The Future," and "Rain Man" (I find Dustin Hoffman to be MUCH better in that film), but "The Graduate" is just a PERFECT contender for being one of the most OVERRATED movies ever made and of ALL-TIME in my opinion.
