Review of The Good Son (1993) by Andrew S — 24 Apr 2011
Many film-goers freak out at the sight of child actors doing horrible deeds and saying horrible things on screen. If the visionary behind the camera had the desire to film something like this just for the sake of doing it, I would be outraged as well.
However, having seen this film several times over, I can tell you that this was not Joseph Ruben's intention. The first time I watched it, it gave me the chills because much of it felt reminiscent of many experiences I had growing up.
Most of what did happen and what could have happened came back to mind, and I couldn't ignore it. While this may not be an excellent film that dives deeply into its subject matter, if taken in stride it can easily be perceived as a cautionary tale.
These sorts of things do happen, and they're happening right under our noses.
