Review of The Good Shepherd (2006) by Peter A — 02 Jan 2010
Full marks to Robert de Niro for producing such a well-crafted film. His reluctance to succumb to populist cliches is to his great credit; the quality of his direction surprised me. Yes, ths is a long film, but all the better for its slow build up to a brilliantly understated yet tight climax.
As for comments that Matt Damon was dull - his character was meant to be impassive. The murky double-dealing world he was operating in requires such characters. The subject matter was not Bugs Bunny! Those that pan this film seem to have missed its point.
It was about a man who was able to elevate the importance of his position above self considerations. De Niro captured this perfectly, with the help of appropriate music and direction in the genre of Orson Welles.
A great and impressive film, but only suitable for those adult enough to give it their full attention.
