Review of The Good German (2006) by Jordan K — 05 Jan 2008

The cast and crew here are trying to put together a first-rate postwar noir film, missing one essential point - they're fifty years away from their context. Technically, the film succeeds admirably at capturing the grain, camera work and music of the time, but one asks the question, why? The result is a piece that while pretty, has all the earnestness of a film school homage to Casablanca or The Third Man - a homage which comes close to outright theft in some scenes.

I also felt that the shifts between narrators was a failed plot device, but ultimately a minor one.
