Review of The Good German (2006) by Caitlin B — 12 Jan 2008
While in post-war Berlin to cover the Potsdam Conference, an American military journalist (Geoge Clooney) is drawn into a murder investigation which involves his former mistress (Cate Blanchett) and his driver (Tobey Maguire).
You ca't deny director Steven Soderbergh has style, and this tribute to classic hollywood is amazing to look at. However George Clooney is not his charming self, and you don't fully buy Cat Blanchett as a Ingrid Bergman-esque femme fatal.
On the other hand Tobey Maguire is whiny and cringe-inducing. Gorgeous style over substance, ironically proving they don't make movies like they used to.
