Review of The Good German (2006) by Alex W — 04 Feb 2008
This black-and-white film was a nearly pitch-perfect nod to 1940's filmmaking (with the notable exceptions of the inclusion of sex, violence and strong language). Tobey Maguire was mis-cast, Cate Blanchett an George Clooney weren't.
Like the intensely retro look of the film, Tobey Maguire as two-bit villian distracted from an already very difficult-to-follow story. I found myself admiring the cinematography, music and timing and not really understanding (or caring) about the plot.
