The thrill you get from Soderbergh channeling Curtiz is fleeting: after five minutes of delightful b&w photography, rear projections and horizontal wipes, one starts to wonder: "what the eff is going on.
..?" Audience rebellion is momentarily quashed by the mesmeric reflective surfaces exhibited by Clooney, Blanchett and the woefully miscast Tobey Maguire. Then it's up to the go-nowhere/do-nothing screenplay.
Writer Paul Attanasio, whose genius was on parade in "Quiz Show" and "Donnie Brasco", serves up an ugly, cruel, humourless homage to (caaaarefullll) "Casablanca" that manages to stutter out an answer to the aforementioned question regarding plot, but fails miserably in answering an even more important question: "why the eff do we CARE?".
