Review of The Good German (2006) by Daniel P — 17 Jan 2012
In two syllables: boring. I'm fairly (on the colder side of ) lukewarm when it comes to Soderbergh movies. Aside from the Ocean's heist movies, he's done nothing that really thrills me but he attracts actors I tend to follow like Julia Roberts and, in this case, George Clooney.
I liked the retro, B&W aspect of this one but very little else. Nice departure from Spider-Man for Maguire, too. But Clooney is too laid back - his character takes a butt-whoopin' from EVERYONE - and none of the characters is likeable.
The "homages" to Casablanca really didn't work for me either. Story moves too slowly and the plot is shaky enough to make it difficult to follow due to a lack of caring. The Good German is a Bad Movie.
