Review of The Good Dinosaur (2015) by Syd B — 27 Feb 2016
For me this was a blemish in Pixar's outstanding record.
It fell below the originality and animation standards they are known for.
'The Good Dinosaur' is basically 'The Land Before Time' merged with 'The Lion King' and 'Life of Pi' with a pinch of 'Brother Bear'.
There is a certain uniqueness to the alternate reality in which dinosaurs are dominate over humans but the believability wasn't there. The storytelling was heartwarming, tear jerking even at a couple of points but one dimensional, lacked some sustanince and development and full of cliches.
Admittingly, however, there are some cliches I'm a bit of a sucker for and Arlo himself was one of those. I thought him rather adorable actually and his affection for Spot gave me some strong feels.
One thing I'll grant storywise is that where Arlo/Spot relationship is left is NOT what I'd expected in a GOOD way. What they did there was smart and the most in depth part of the whole film.
It was by no means a disappointment but also not impressive.
