Review of The Golden Compass (2007) by Benjamin C — 28 Nov 2010
The Golden Compass becomes a great big fantasy filled mess quite quickly. Dakota Blue Richards and Nicole Kidman quickly become annoyances, which is extremely hard to bear seeing as they are the protagonist and antagonist, respectfully.
The plot relies on random climax and resolution to hold attention. Essentially, there is no ongoing conflict but rather a string of smaller, dull ones. The few, almost cameo-like, appearances by Daniel Craig and Eva Green are the only things that hold the audience's attention.
The film really crashes when it abruptly ends with virtually no conclusion, or even conflict, apparent.
