Review of The Golden Compass (2007) by Jeffrey C — 21 May 2011
Right, so I haven't read the books this movie is based on, so I have to judge it based on just what I saw. The fantasy world The Golden Compass presents seems interesting and the plot seems to have loads of elements to make it big and larger-than-life but somehow it just doesn't quite make it and ends up soulless.
The cast is incredibly full of Stars, but maybe that's part of the problem, then? Still, when it came down to making sense of the whole thing, a bit more explaining would've been in order; say -Who are the gypsies? - What is Dust? - What was the thing powering that automobile Lyra drove with Mrs Coulter? - Since there was a realm of polar bears, were there other animal counries, too? ETC, ETC.
.. And don't tell me it was all supposed to be clear in part two since there isn't going to be one!
