Review of The Golden Compass (2007) by Nate W — 21 Aug 2011
Burdened by an ill-paced and bumpy adaptation of Bill Pulman's fantasy tome (an overrated property to begin with), "The Golden Compass" hops along arrhythmically, pausing occasionally for an action set piece.
Not helping things is the needlessly overt 'subtext' about the Orwellian government known as the Magesterium and the manifestation of characters' motivations and feelings through their anthropomorphized animal daemons.
While the production and costume design is deliciously detailed, the effects are inconsistent and dodgy (despite bafflingly defeating "Transformers" for the Academy Award).
