Review of The Golden Compass (2007) by Roshan C — 17 Dec 2011
Those who have not seen this film are yet to experience the sad tragedy of watching The Golden Compass. Phillip Pullman's book was a complex epic story something the film simply cannot match. Dakota Blue-Richards makes a Lyra so without personality it's hard to even know who she is.
Daniel Craig's impressive performance is sadly wasted by his unthinkably short screen time while Nicole Kidman, who although plays the role of Mrs Coulter to icy perfection, is wierdly lacking in depth.
For a film that should be Lord of the Rings class, we would want loads of action instead everything is narrowed down to a silly flurry of witches and polar bears at the end. You've got to ask yourself why this well-made fantasy film was not the masterpiece it deserved to be.
The main factor is it's abruptly cut-short ending. The Golden Compass delivers it's final message and then ultimately falls apart.
