Review of The Golden Compass (2007) by Hannah M — 05 Jan 2012
This rating is subject to change, perhaps. I will say right off the bat that I was immensely entertained, so much in fact that it felt like the movie hardly took a second to stop and decompress. It just kept going, full speed.
But I'm not complaining about that. There is something though that I just didn't like. Had I never known about all the controversy circulating around this film, upon watching it, I (as an adult) would probably have been able to grasp that there's a darker concept behind what's really going on anyway.
The whole movie had a sort of sinister seedy underbelly, but it's difficult to put my finger on a specific thing. By the end, I didn't know whether to be frightened, disturbed, frustrated, or very very concerned.
I also get why it received a PG-13 rating and if I was the parent of young children I probably wouldn't take my kids to see it. I don't know. There it is. My review in a nutshell: I just...don't know.
