This is just an example of studio interference wiping out a potentially great film. Originally shot scene-for-scene like the novel that it was based on, the studio felt that the book's anti-religious message would offend a soccer mom somewhere and made it into your average kiddie fare.

If only they would release a director's cut sometime.
