Review of The Golden Compass (2007) by Neal P — 06 Dec 2013
I'm aware of the Christian backlash against this film, that didn't bother me. I also haven't read the books yet. The film has an excellent cast. Basically a young girl at an orphanage sets out to save her friend who has been kidnapped.
They all have daemons with them. She meets up with various characters along the way, but they really don't add anything and just add to the mess of a plot. Nothing done past the first 20 minutes really have any bearing on the outcome of the film.
A lot also isn't really explained in the film, so someone like me who hasn't read the book. Should have been better with the cast, needed more explanations, probably a little longer, and make things that happen actually mean something in the film.
The CGI is actually really good, but that's not going to save the film.
